Consecration

By Jewish custom and law, a grave should be marked and identified with the erection of a Memorial Stone after the initial mourning period (Shiva), and within one year of burial. This is done out of respect for the deceased as well as to indicate clearly where a person is buried, so that family and friends may visit the gravesite.

Following the erection of a Memorial Stone, you may wish to have a Consecration Service (also known as the Stone Setting) held in the Cemetery’s Ohel (chapel). Although there is no requirement to have a Consecration Service, it is widely accepted as a custom.

In addition, a Memorial Plaque can be put up in the Synagogue to mark the anniversary (Yahrzeit). It is firstly illuminated during the Consecration Service and then at each Yahrzeit in the Synagogue when prayers are said.

How do I book a consecration?

We will contact you around 30 days after the bereavement.

How do I order a Memorial Stone?

You will order this through an external stonemason of your choice. The current takes around 25 weeks from order to the finished product, but this does vary from time to time so it is best to contact the stonemason well in advance for an accurate answer.
